THE HERITAGE POOLS FIBERGLASS CONSTRUCTION PROCESS
From Stake to Splash — Every Step, Done Right
Choosing a fiberglass pool means choosing elegance, efficiency, and enduring quality. At Heritage Pools, we’ve spent over 20 years perfecting our installation process specifically for Charleston’s Lowcountry conditions — and we believe you deserve to see exactly how your pool comes to life. Here’s every step of the journey, from the moment we mark your yard to the day you take your first swim.
STEP 01 — STAKE OUT
Precision Before the First Shovel Hits the Ground
Every great pool starts with a great plan — and that plan lives in your yard before it lives in the ground. Our team carefully stakes out the exact footprint of your fiberglass pool using your approved design drawings, marking every dimension and feature with precision. This critical step ensures your pool lands exactly where it’s designed to be, perfectly positioned within your outdoor space.
STEP 02 — EXCAVATION
Making Room for Something Remarkable
With the layout confirmed, our crew brings in the heavy equipment and begins excavating to the precise dimensions of your fiberglass shell. Unlike concrete pools, fiberglass pools require an exceptionally accurate excavation — the hole must match the shell’s shape closely to ensure proper support and stability. Our team carefully manages Charleston’s challenging soil and groundwater conditions throughout this phase.
STEP 03 — SET POOL
The Shell Arrives. The Magic Begins.
This is the step that makes fiberglass installation truly unique. Your fiberglass pool shell — factory-manufactured to exacting standards — arrives at your home and is carefully craned into the excavated space. Our factory-trained team positions the shell with precision, ensuring it’s perfectly level and properly seated before anything else moves forward. It’s one of the most exciting moments of the entire build.
STEP 04 — POUR FLOOR / BED PREPARATION
A Stable Foundation Beneath Every Shell
Before and during the shell set, our team prepares and secures the base beneath your fiberglass pool. A properly graded sand or gravel bed supports the shell’s floor evenly, preventing settling and protecting the structure long-term. Where soil conditions require it, we add concrete collar work around the pool to lock the shell into a firm, stable foundation built to handle the Lowcountry’s unpredictable ground.
STEP 05 — LONG PLUMB
The Invisible Work That Powers Everything
With the shell set and secured, our team trenches and runs all plumbing lines from your pool to the equipment pad. Every return line, suction line, and specialty feature connection is carefully routed, secured, and tested — the behind-the-scenes infrastructure that makes your pool’s water clean, clear, and perfectly circulated for years to come.
STEP 06 — SET SPA
Where Relaxation Takes Shape
For pools designed with a spa, this is where it’s brought to life. Our team sets and integrates the fiberglass spa unit, connecting it to the pool’s plumbing and circulation system with the same precision and care as the pool itself. Whether you’ve chosen an attached spa or a spillover style, every detail is dialed in at this stage.
STEP 07 — BACKFILL
Locking the Structure in Place
Once your shell, plumbing, and spa are fully confirmed and connected, we carefully backfill the space around the pool with properly compacted material. This step stabilizes the shell and prepares the surrounding area for decking. Proper backfill technique is essential with fiberglass pools — our team ensures even, compacted fill that supports the shell walls without creating pressure that could cause shifting over time.
STEP 08 — SYSTEM
Power, Filtration, and Automation — All Connected
Our certified service technicians install and connect your complete equipment system at the designated pad. Variable-speed pump, high-efficiency filter, heater, automation controls, and sanitization system — every component is selected and installed to work together as one seamlessly integrated system. One of the great advantages of fiberglass is how beautifully it pairs with today’s automated, low-maintenance pool technology.
STEP 09 — FOOTER
The Perimeter That Anchors It All
A concrete bonding footer is poured around the perimeter of your pool, creating a solid structural anchor between the fiberglass shell and your future coping and decking. This step ties the entire installation together and ensures the transition from water to deck is as structurally sound as it is visually seamless.
STEP 10 — COPING
The Finishing Edge That Defines Your Pool
Coping is the crown of your pool — the finished edge that transitions from the shell to the surrounding deck. Our team professionally installs your selected coping material, creating a clean, durable border that ties the entire design together with a polished, resort-quality look. From classic bullnose to contemporary flat coping or natural stone, every piece is set with care.
STEP 11 — DECK AND SPA SURROUND
Where Design Meets Everyday Living
Your deck is more than a surface — it’s where every memory around your pool gets made. Our team installs your chosen decking material with proper slope for drainage and a flawless finished appearance. The spa surround is completed at this stage as well, creating a cohesive, polished outdoor space that looks as good as it feels underfoot.
STEP 12 — WATER FILL & START-UP
The Moment Your Pool Comes to Life
One of the most exciting advantages of fiberglass is this: there’s no liner to install. Your fiberglass shell is the finished surface — smooth, non-porous, and ready to swim. Once the deck is complete, we begin filling your pool and activating your equipment systems. Our team balances your water chemistry, tests every system, and ensures everything is performing exactly as designed before handing the pool over to you.
STEP 13 — COMPLETION
Welcome to Your New Backyard
Your pool is full, your systems are running, and your backyard has been transformed. Before we call it done, our team walks you through a comprehensive pool school — covering water chemistry basics, equipment operation, routine maintenance, and everything you need to enjoy your new pool with total confidence. This isn’t just the end of a build. It’s the beginning of a lifetime of memories.
