Storm Prep for Pool Owners
Before the Storm
☐ Do Not Drain the Pool
Keeping the pool full helps prevent structural damage from ground pressure. Lowering the water slightly (no more than 12 inches) is acceptable for heavy rain.
☐ Turn Off All Power to Pool Equipment
Shut off circuit breakers and timers. Disconnect power to pumps, heaters, and automation systems to prevent electrical damage.
☐ Remove and Store Loose Items
Secure or remove furniture, umbrellas, skimmer lids, toys, vacuums, and accessories. These can become dangerous projectiles in high winds.
☐ Cover Exposed Equipment
Use waterproof covers or heavy-duty plastic to protect the pump, filter, heater, and control panels. Ensure they are tightly secured and elevated if flooding is possible.
☐ Balance the Water Chemistry
Shock the pool and ensure sanitizer levels are correct. A well-sanitized pool can better resist contamination from debris.
☐ Secure the Pool Cover (If Applicable)
Tighten safety cover straps or lock automatic covers in place. Do not install or leave on lightweight covers during high winds.
After the Storm
☐ Inspect the Area for Safety First
Do not touch electrical components if they are wet or submerged. Wait for water to recede and consult a professional if unsure.
☐ Remove Debris from Water and Surroundings
Skim large debris by hand. Avoid running equipment until all large debris is cleared.
☐ Check and Restart Equipment
Inspect for water damage or obstructions. Prime and restart the pump, and confirm proper flow. Reset timers and automation systems as needed.
☐ Test and Balance Water Chemistry
Heavy rain can disrupt all water parameters. Test pH, chlorine, alkalinity, and stabilizer, and adjust as necessary.
☐ Schedule a System Check if Needed
If anything looks off or underperforms, contact Heritage Pools. We’ll inspect your plumbing, equipment, and automation to ensure everything is working safely.
