Ronan Project

With wide open views to the salt marsh, easy dock access and multiple areas for entertaining, this custom backyard space was transformed into a private Lowcountry paradise.
We caught up with the homeowners of this project to provide some insight into the design/build process.

What influenced the design of your pool and backyard space? The intent of the our pool design was to complement our backyard with our dock and the adjacent salt marsh on the Wando River.  The pool and hardscape design also incorporated a wall along the marsh to offer additional protection from the occasional king tides.  Heritage also designed the gate and pillars that serve as a secure entrance to the dock’s catwalk across the salt marsh to the river. What was the process like to build your ideal pool and backyard space?David, Heritage Pools designer, worked with Pamela (wife) to best utilize the limited space that was available for a pool in the backyard.  They also created a pool and hardscape design that allowed for gardens on each side of the pool, but no grass in the yard which was our preference.  David and his team then secured all of the necessary permits including the Dunes West Architectural Review Board approval. Heritage also coordinated all of the sub contractors, i.e. hardscape, landscaping, fence installation, etc. throughout the project.

What types of issues, if any, did you encounter during the process?Unfortunately the construction process occurred during the onset of COVID so there were unanticipated delays.  Anytime there was an issue Heritage responded up to and including the opportunity to meet with Michael, Heritage Pools owner.  The pool construction took longer than anticipated, but we couldn’t be happier with the finished product. How does the overall design influence your lifestyle now?During the majority of months, we are able to enjoy the pool area with it’s spacious lounging and eating locations; the fire pit which was incorporated into the pool design; an outdoor kitchen which was subsequently added, and of course, the pool itself that is located mostly in shade during the afternoon…..a significant advantage during the months of July and August.  Our children and grandchildren enjoy the pool during the warm weather weekends from sunrise to sunset.  We are fortunate to be able to enjoy the pool and it’s accoutrements everyday of the week. The space is also party ready throughout the year.

What advice would you give to homeowners looking to design and build a new pool?Understand that there are going to be unanticipated issues and delays.  Communication on both sides is key.  Be sure to work with a reputable pool company.  Do your homework upfront by consulting references.  Be aware that there are safety and security requirements such as fencing with the appropriate heights, alarms on doors leading to the pool area, locks on gates, etc.  Also, consider using Heritage Pools Service to maintain your pool.  They know your pool and it’s equipment and they are very thorough with their maintenance of the pool each week.
